Manhua means Chinese comics. In English, the term usually refers to comics from Chinese-speaking publishing traditions, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Manhua can be printed or digital, in color or black and white. It is not one genre, and it does not mean Chinese animation.

The word is written 漫画 in simplified Chinese and 漫畫 in traditional Chinese, pronounced mànhuà in Mandarin. In Chinese it can mean comics generally; English-language discussions use it more narrowly to distinguish Chinese comics from manga and manhwa.

Manhua vs manga, manhwa and donghua

TermUsual meaning in EnglishReading or viewing format
ManhuaChinese comicsScrolling or pages; page direction depends on the edition.
MangaJapanese comicsUsually right-to-left pages; check the edition for exceptions.
ManhwaKorean comicsOften vertical scroll online; printed editions commonly read left to right.
DonghuaChinese animationWatched as animated series or films, not read as comic panels.

Use the work’s publishing background, not its color palette or the country where its plot takes place, to tell the comic labels apart. A Chinese comic does not become manga because its English edition is in black and white, and a fantasy setting does not make a Korean comic manhua.

A franchise may have both a comic and an animated adaptation. If you came looking for episodes to watch rather than chapters to read, see what donghua means.

Do you read manhua left to right or right to left?

There is no single direction for all manhua. Read a vertical-scroll edition from top to bottom. For a page-based edition, follow its reading guide: Chinese comics can use left-to-right or right-to-left layouts. The format you have open is more useful than a rule based only on the label.

When changing editions, chapter numbers may differ because a platform splits an installment or a book collects several. Match the last scene you remember as well as the number. Start with the comic’s own chapter one if you are coming from a novel or animation and cannot confirm an adaptation crossover point.

Is manhua the same as a webtoon or a web novel?

No. A webtoon is a digital comic format, commonly arranged for vertical scrolling; manhua identifies a comic tradition. A Chinese comic can be both. WEBTOON, capitalized, is also a platform name, so its catalogue is not a nationality label.

A web novel is prose published online. A manhua adaptation retells a story through panels and dialogue, and its pacing or chapter divisions may differ from the novel. Buying a novel volume with an illustrated cover does not give you the comic adaptation.

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation makes the distinction easy to see: look for “The Comic / Manhua” on the product listing if you want panels, and “Novel” if you want prose. The shared franchise name is not enough to identify the format.

Is manhua only cultivation? Three different examples

No. Cultivation and martial arts are only part of the field. Romance, comedy, historical drama, mystery and other kinds of fantasy also appear in manhua. These examples offer different reasons to pick up a Chinese comic:

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: The ComicA feared cultivator returns to life and confronts old secrets alongside someone from his past.Historical fantasy, mystery and a central male–male romance.
Release That WitchAn engineer becomes a prince in a world where witches have usable magical powers.Technology, problem-solving and kingdom-building fantasy.

Here U Are illustrates the range of stories, not an English-edition recommendation: the Star Comics edition pictured here is Italian.

Where can you read manhua in English?

Start with the publisher or licensed platform for the title you want. No single service carries every manhua, and access, language options and purchase formats can vary by country. Two concrete starting points are:

Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation: The Comic, volume 1 — Seven Seas: an official English full-color paperback. The listing identifies the comic format and links to retailers.

Release That Witch — Tapas comic edition: an official English digital option published in episodes. Open the comic’s first episode or available preview to see whether scrolling suits you.

A free sample does not necessarily mean the whole series is free. Check the platform’s current unlock options before planning a long read; prices and access rules can change. For print, check the language, volume number and sample pages before ordering.

How to choose your first manhua

Choose the story first, then the edition. A romance reader need not start with a cultivation epic, and someone who prefers paper need not commit to an app. In the sample, check that you can follow the panels comfortably and that the dialogue gives you a reason to continue.
