Renegade Immortal is worth trying if you enjoy cultivation fantasy driven by a determined, increasingly unforgiving protagonist. Its biggest attraction is momentum: Wang Lin does not stay trapped in the same situation for long. The reservation is just as important. If you want leisurely world-building or plenty of time with a supporting cast, the brisk adaptation can feel impatient.

What is Renegade Immortal about?

Also known as Xian Ni (仙逆), this Chinese animated series adapts Er Gen’s cultivation novel. Wang Lin starts as a rural boy whose family hopes he will amount to something. The opportunity to seek immortality sounds like an escape from that small life, until he discovers that his natural talent is unremarkable.

That starting point gives the power fantasy something useful to work against. Wang Lin wants more than a longer lifespan: he wants a say in what happens to him. In a setting where stronger cultivators can determine someone else’s future, gaining power also means gaining room to refuse them.

This is a spoiler-light look at the premise and the adaptation’s early approach, not a recap of later arcs. Expect conflict, harsh choices and cultivation terminology. Do not expect a gentle school adventure simply because the story begins with a young newcomer.

Why Wang Lin is the reason to try it

The contrast between his beginnings and the severe figure in the promotional art is the central hook. A boy carrying his parents’ hopes is easier to care about than a powerful stranger introduced only through a fight. His modest ability also makes the question more interesting: what will he do when effort alone is not enough?

The appeal is not that every decision makes him likeable. It is the tension between understanding why someone becomes harder and being comfortable with the result. If you enjoy following a protagonist whose priorities can become narrower under pressure, that is a stronger reason to watch than the promise of ever-bigger attacks.

On the other hand, a self-protective lead is not automatically an emotionally inviting one. Viewers who need their hero to forgive readily, put a group first or lighten the mood may find this a difficult fit. The family connection gives the story a human starting point; it does not turn the whole journey into comfort viewing.

Fast pacing: the selling point and the drawback

The early compression is substantial. In its December 2023 analysis, ACGx, writing on Ali213, described the first fourteen episodes as covering roughly the opening 140 novel chapters. That is a useful indication of the adaptation’s approach, not a fixed conversion you can use to jump between any episode and chapter.

For a viewer who gets bored waiting for a cultivation story to move, the benefit is clear: training, danger and progress arrive close together. The potential cost is the space between them. Meeting someone, understanding their place in the world and caring about what happens to them are different things; speed can squeeze the last two.

This is where your viewing habits matter. If a changing situation keeps you interested, the pace may be an advantage. If you regularly pause to ask why a sect matters or how a relationship developed, the novel is likely to be the more comfortable format. Neither reaction requires you to be unfamiliar with cultivation stories.

The 3D look: decide with motion, not a poster

Renegade Immortal uses 3D CG rather than a hand-drawn 2D style. Its promotional images lean on detailed clothing, sharp character silhouettes and dramatic light. Those choices suit the imposing version of Wang Lin the series sells: the armour and posture communicate severity before any dialogue does.

A polished still cannot tell you how a conversation plays or whether a busy fight is easy to follow. Before committing to a long run, watch an opening episode as well as a trailer. Pay attention to faces, movement and whether you can read the action comfortably. Those are better tests of your taste in 3D animation than the detail in a key visual.

If 3D character designs usually put you off, treat this as something to sample, not a guaranteed exception. Conversely, enjoying the visual style does not settle the pacing question. The two are separate reasons you might stay with—or leave—a show.

Donghua or novel: which should you start with?

Choose the donghua if voices, music and seeing the fantasy world on screen are what bring you into a story. Choose the novel if you would rather spend more time with the narration than move quickly from one development to the next. The original is prose, not the manhua adaptation; searching for the comic will lead you to a different version again.

The novel is complete. Wuxiaworld lists the licensed English translation by Rex, with 2,094 chapters. That is a completed reading option, not a promise of unrestricted free access. You do not need to read it before trying the animation, and knowing the ending is not a prerequisite for following Wang Lin’s early journey.

For a first watch, learn terms as they become relevant rather than studying the whole power system in advance. The immediate question is usually who holds the advantage in a scene, not where every eventual rank sits. A full hierarchy can reveal future milestones that the episode has not introduced yet.

Where to watch, and which listing to choose

Look for the main Renegade Immortal series on WeTV or check Crunchyroll’s catalogue in your region. Crunchyroll announced its initial 24-episode release in October 2025. That launch announcement should not be read as a guarantee that every later episode is available there now; subtitle choices and access also depend on the service and country.

As of September 15, 2026, WeTV’s main page displayed “To EP 157” while its metadata also said “All 180 EPs.” Those are different labels. The latter does not establish that 180 episodes are already playable or that the whole novel has been adapted. Use the numbered playlist to check what your account can actually watch.

For a newcomer, select the main numbered series. The Quick browsing version is a separate condensed listing, and Divine Descent has its own entry. Neither should be mistaken for episode 1 of the regular series just because a search result puts it first.

Who should watch—and who might pass?

The recommendation comes down to one trade-off: are you more interested in following Wang Lin forward, or in lingering over the world around him? Renegade Immortal makes the first option its strongest invitation. Start at the beginning and see whether his predicament catches your interest; the striking white-haired version of him is not a reason to skip the setup.
